This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to move and handle pigs. This unit applies to workers in pork production who undertake routine pig handling tasks under supervision. Work environments may include indoor and outdoor pork production systems. Commonwealth and/or state/territory health and safety, animal welfare, environmental protection and biosecurity legislation, regulations and codes of practice apply to keeping and working with pigs. Requirements vary between jurisdictions. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.

E1Prepare for movement of pigs
0718.E1.O1Identify and follow biosecurity procedures that apply to entering and working on a pork production site
0718.E1.O2Confirm pigs to be moved, their current location, their destination and timing of the move
0718.E1.O3Confirm enterprise animal welfare and biosecurity requirements for pig movement
0718.E1.O4Identify health and safety hazards, assess risks and control and/or report risks prior to commencing tasks
0718.E1.O5Select, prepare and fit appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the tasks and conditions
0718.E1.O6Check gates and/or pathways/routes for clear access, and readiness of destination to receive pigs
0718.E1.O7Advise other workers of upcoming pig movement as required
E2Move pigs
0718.E2.O1Determine pigs to be moved individually and/or in groups
0718.E2.O2Handle, move and/or lift pigs using safe manual handling techniques, and low stress animal handling techniques
0718.E2.O3Monitor pig behaviour during all handling and moving activities, and identify and respond to situations and hazards that arise to avoid or minimise injury to self, others and pigs
0718.E2.O4Report and seek assistance from supervisor for incidents and/or risks beyond level of own responsibility
E3Complete movement of pigs
0718.E3.O1Check pigs are safely and securely housed or enclosed at destination
0718.E3.O2Reset gates and raceways as required
0718.E3.O3Clean and store equipment used to handle and move pigs as required
0718.E3.O4Complete pig movement records, and report incidents according to enterprise procedures
