This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to remove non-friable asbestos containing material (ACM). It includes preparing, containing and removing non-friable ACM, and knowledge of decontamination and disposal requirements. Site location can be a real workplace or simulated environment that may include domestic or commercial premises, a demolition site, a new worksite or an existing structure being renovated, extended, restored or maintained. Project sites for removal of non-friable asbestos include construction sites, ships and soils.

E1Prepare for asbestos removal.
0159.E1.O1Obtain work instructions and participate in review of asbestos removal control plan (ARCP) and safe work method statements (SWMS).
0159.E1.O2Gather safety requirements and data from an on-site assessment and asbestos register where available.
0159.E1.O3Use information sources to ensure the ARCP and SWMS are site-specific for the removal of asbestos materials.
0159.E1.O4Select tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) consistent with job requirements to carry out tasks, check for serviceability, and rectify or report faults prior to commencement.
0159.E1.O5Notify regulator, occupants, neighbours and other affected parties according to legislation and within limits of own responsibility and code of practice.
0159.E1.O6Contribute to the preparation and use of an emergency plan, within limits of own responsibility and according to legislative and company requirements.
0159.E1.O7Contribute to processes required to undertake air monitoring and to meet health monitoring requirements in line with level of authority and responsibility and regulatory requirements.
E2Prepare asbestos removal site.
0159.E2.O1Identify location of non-friable asbestos materials and confirm with supervisor location of site boundaries.
0159.E2.O2Implement signage and barricade requirements to delineate the asbestos removal site according to ARCP.
0159.E2.O3Prepare and place materials and equipment required for removal of ACM from site.
E3Set up asbestos work area.
0159.E3.O1Designate boundaries of asbestos work area according to ARCP requirements.
0159.E3.O2Set up decontamination according to ARCP.
0159.E3.O3Set up asbestos waste storage and waste transit route according to ARCP.
0159.E3.O4Undertake processes to ensure the safety of the site, including deactivating or securing utilities where necessary prior to commencing work.
E4Remove non-friable asbestos.
0159.E4.O1Fit-check respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and fit PPE.
0159.E4.O2Wet down or spray work area with particle binder.
0159.E4.O3Carry out asbestos removal ensuring airborne asbestos fibres are kept to a minimum (i.e. appropriate tools, wet removal, minimise breakage, good handling techniques).
0159.E4.O4Contain, wrap or otherwise seal the wet asbestos, place into removal bags or bins, seal and label according to ARCP.
E5Carry out decontamination process.
0159.E5.O1Carry out decontamination of the work area and tools according to ARCP.
0159.E5.O2Carry out personal decontamination according to ARCP.
E6Clean up work area.
0159.E6.O1Remove asbestos waste materials and equipment from the area according to ARCP.
0159.E6.O2Store tools, plant and equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and regulatory requirements to ensure site is ready for clearance inspection.
0159.E6.O3Take steps to ensure clearance inspection requirements are met, within the limits of own responsibility and to ensure clearance certificate is gained from a competent person or licensed asbestos assessor.
E7Complete regulatory processes
0159.E7.O1Ensure clearance inspection is undertaken prior to removing signage, plant and equipment.
0159.E7.O2Contribute to the preparation and use of documentation for regulatory notification processes, within limits of own responsibility and according to legislative and company requirements.
0159.E7.O3Provide stakeholders with clearance inspection certificate prior to reoccupation, as required.
