This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to set out, assemble and install prepared components of straight flight stairs, meeting all relevant requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC), Australian Standards, work health and safety (WHS), and Commonwealth and state or territory legislation. Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

0182.E1.O1Read and interpret work instructions and plan sequence of work.
0182.E1.O2Plan all work to comply with laws and regulations, the National Construction Code (NCC), Australian Standards, work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements, manufacturers’ specifications, workplace requirements, drawings and specifications.
0182.E1.O3Select tools and equipment, check for serviceability and report any faults.
0182.E1.O4Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) for each part of the task.
0182.E1.O5Inspect work site, locate services, assess hazards and apply risk controls, including required signage and barricades.
0182.E1.O6Measure stairwell, check against drawings and make adjustments or report issues.
0182.E1.O7Check stair components to identify, rectify and/or report imperfections and variances from specifications.
E2Assemble and fix stringers and newel posts.
0182.E2.O1Assemble and fix or temporarily support all stringers in position.

0182.E2.O3Brace assembled stringers and newel posts temporarily in a vertical position.
E3Install treads and risers.
0182.E3.O1Cut manufactured treads and risers to length, fit and fix to assembly, and check top flight to be true and square.
0182.E3.O2Fit and wedge intermediate treads and risers to fit tight to housings.
E4Assemble and install landings.
0182.E4.O1Fit and fix landing joists to level.
0182.E4.O2Fit and fix nosing and flooring to specified finish and fit, and fix fascia to landing.
E5Install balustrade.
0182.E5.O1Fit balusters and check for plumb.
0182.E5.O2Put newel posts in position, check for plumb, and fix.
0182.E5.O3Fit and check height of handrails, and fix.
E6Finish stair installation and clean up.
