This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to prepare uncoated surfaces for the application of paint. A person who has achieved this unit of competency would be expected to take responsibility for organising and completing these tasks with a high degree of self-direction. Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

E1Plan and prepare.
0272.E1.O1Review work instructions to prepare uncoated surfaces for painting.
0272.E1.O2Plan all work to meet relevant requirements of Australian Standards, work health and safety (WHS), Commonwealth and state or territory legislation, environmental plans and obligations, manufacturers’ specifications, and workplace requirements.
0272.E1.O3Select and fit personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for each task.
0272.E1.O4Inspect work site, assess hazards and apply risk controls, including required signage and barricades.
0272.E1.O5Select tools and equipment, check for serviceability and report any faults.
E2Prepare uncoated surfaces.
0272.E2.O1Determine and test condition and nature of substrate and surface material by conducting a moisture test.
0272.E2.O2Select surface preparation method in accordance with environmental, finish and substrate requirements.
0272.E2.O3Prepare surfaces by removing loose debris.
0272.E2.O4Repair and fill surfaces to a smooth finish ready for painting.
E3Clean up.
0272.E3.O1Clean up, meeting all legislative and workplace requirements for safety, waste disposal, materials handling and protection of the environment.
0272.E3.O2Check and maintain tools and equipment and clean with appropriate solvents.
