This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to apply sealants and sealant devices to structures. The unit is suitable for those with basic skills and knowledge undertaking routine work tasks under the direction of more experienced workers. Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

E1Plan and prepare.
0319.E1.O1Review work instructions to apply and install sealant and sealant devices.
0319.E1.O2Plan all work to comply with laws and regulations, national construction codes, Australian Standards, work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements, manufacturers’ specifications and safety data sheets (SDS), workplace requirements, drawings and specifications.
0319.E1.O3Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) for each part of the task.
0319.E1.O4Select tools and equipment, check for serviceability and report any faults.
0319.E1.O5Calculate sealant material quantities to meet work instructions.
0319.E1.O6Identify, obtain and prepare required materials and safely locate them ready for use.
E2Prepare surface to receive sealants.
0319.E2.O1Clean surface free of contaminants in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
0319.E2.O2Prepare surface by sanding or cleaning in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
E3Apply sealant.

0319.E3.O2Check to ensure no air has been trapped within applied sealant and rectify as required.
0319.E3.O3Align surfaces and install fixings in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
E4Install sealant devices.

0319.E4.O2Secure installation of fixture and check to ensure level and plumb to line.
E5Clean up.
0319.E5.O1Remove excess sealant from joints and surrounding surfaces and securely seal cartridge nozzle or container.
0319.E5.O2Promptly remove sealants from tools and equipment.
0319.E5.O3Clean up work site, meeting all legislative and workplace requirements for safety, waste disposal and materials handling.
