Lesson 3.2 — Protection: MCB, RCD & Earthing

MCBOverload &short-circuitProtects CABLESSizes: 6·10·16·20·32 ARCD 30 mAEarth-leakageimbalance L vs NProtects PEOPLETrips in < 40 msEarthing (PE)Rod + green-yellowconductor to framesGives fault current asafe path → device tripsThe three layers work together: earthing creates the path, MCB clears big faults, RCD catches small leaks.

Competency 5 is the safety heart of the course. The MCB protects cables from overload and short circuit. The RCD compares current in line and neutral; a 30 mA difference — current leaking through a person — trips it in under 40 ms, faster than a heartbeat. Earthing gives fault current a highway home so devices trip instantly. An installation missing any one of the three is a trap waiting for a victim.

Test the RCD button monthly — a stuck RCD is invisible until the day it matters.
