Lesson 1.1 — Know Your Enemy: EV Types & Configurations
Before you touch a vehicle you must know exactly what class of machine you are dealing with, because the depower procedure differs for each. A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) has no engine at all — everything runs from a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) operating at 400 V in most vehicles and up to 800 V in newer platforms. A Hybrid (HEV) hides a smaller ~200 V pack behind a petrol engine and never plugs in. A Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) combines both worlds. A Fuel Cell vehicle (FCEV) adds 700-bar hydrogen to the electrical hazard list. In Cambodian workshops today you will most often meet BEVs (BYD, Toyota bZ4X, Nissan LEAF) and HEVs (Prius, Camry hybrid) — and the mix is growing monthly.

- Identify an EV before opening anything: no exhaust, no fuel flap (BEV), charge port, blue badging, silent start, energy-flow display
- Voltage classes: SELV ≤ 60 V DC (safe by design) — HV is everything above it: 200–800 V DC on the traction bus
- The traction battery is DC. DC above 60 V does not 'let go' — it clamps muscles harder than AC
- Never assume configuration from the badge — verify the exact model and year in the workshop manual
