Lesson 2.2 — The Service Plug: Breaking the Battery
PC 2.2: remove the RESS service plug or manual service disconnect (MSD) to depower the HV system. The MSD physically opens the middle of the battery string — with it removed, even a welded-shut contactor cannot energise the bus, and on most designs the main HV fuse comes out with the plug. Glove up (Class 0, air-tested, over-protectors on), face shield down, one hand where practicable. Designs vary: lever-and-slide (Toyota/Lexus), twist-and-pull (Nissan LEAF), bolt-secured plates (some BYD/Hyundai) and low-voltage interlock connectors. The plug's own interlock tells the vehicle it has been pulled — never bypass or tape an interlock closed. Location: under rear seats, in the boot floor, under the centre console, or behind an underbody cover — the manual tells you, not your memory of a different model.
